Title: what wires needed just to get the motor to turn over?
Post by: able on November 21, 2010, 02:30:02 PM
at the moment i have no wires connected what so ever in my 202 and have put a blue dizzy and a slime line starter from another model.

i just need a quick guide to be able to kick the motor over that does not have to run through the dash as the dash is all removed.

just battery and starter if possible.....

thanx.

Buga just wrote it all up and lost it.

Try again

Do you want the motor to just crank over or run ?

to just crank over you need two ciruits - the main power cct and a starting/switching cct.

First the main power cct - heavy cable from the +ve of the battery to the large +ve post( 8mm bolt thingie) on the starter soleniod, and another large cable from the -ve post to ground, either direct back to the batter or to ground on the chassis.

Now a switching cct - lighter wire from the +ve of the battery with an in line toggle or momentry switch to the +ve bayonet connector om the soleniod close to the posts, and from the -ve bayonet connector back to earth or -ve of the battery.

Press the moonetry switch or flip the toggle and you should have movment - just be carefull as you dont have any fuses in the ccts.

If you want it to run you need another switching cct to the coil - same as the starter switching cct - but this time just a toggle switch will do - from +ve on the battery via a toggle to the +ve connrctor on the coil and from the -ve to earth (or battery)

read the wireing diagram and only look at the cct from the battery to the starter to hel visualise what Im saying.

hope this helps Warren

If you

Dano, just try a wire from positive batt., to positive coil and see if you have spark, before you turf the dissy

Dano check the small earth strap in the dizzy is connected and also check you haven't got the points wire on the wrong side of the insulator and try dropping the gap to 16 thou if you still get nothing and you got 12 v at the pos side of coil I 'd say your coil is cactus

I agree bypass all the ignition cicuitry as I stated earlier

This will isolate all your harnesses ignition cct, and if it starts - go looking further - if it dont - get another dizzy.

*Edit Merlin got in before me - yeah the coil could be an issue too.

Always replace the cheapest part first.

ok thanks lads, i do have power right to the points, just going to try 16th + earth return to batt, me thinks an earthing prob. the dizz base plate seems a little loose (points  screw to) and i can move the little weights / cam lobes is this correct? (just a toggle to open /close points)

Dano

Those little weights are the mechanical advance units they move the shaft as the revs increase the centrafugal force forces the cam lobes around, advancing? the timing.

So you should be able to move the shaft 5 or so degrees.

Ok,was able to finally get a good spark at the points, using my supa coil, and direct + from batt to pos coil, changed back to new old coil and the spark was there but seemed weak, changed back to supa coil and fitted dizzycap and lead, laid lead to floor/earth to check spark and seemed weak, tested lead, 6.82 resistance,??? and by this time the batt was getting tied so went out to get new batt but nothing open.......cracked a burbon kicked the kin thing and went inside...... :D

2morro....dam it!

I was able to "return" the points, condenser, resistor, for $60.00... ;) so all in all $266......was worth every penny... considering I was climbing all the the fn van.. for hrs too.

only catch is you'll need a second set of leads, points dizzy = male type leads, EI = female type, just note what type of headers you have as this will save you a second trip .

Neat. it looks to be the same dizzy I've got on the 253 but I never knew what brand it was. The 308 is still running points and a coil.

Have you played with the adjustable vacuum advance yet? The one on my 253 is seized and I reckon I'd twist it off before it turned  :(
