sorry i could not find my camera when i did this little experiment but
i very succesfully cut pieces of laminatyed glass with a jigsaw and glass cutting bit.
using grandad;s method with the tape.
i found any sort of tape will do
i had a go at toughened and cut about 1 inch (a lot tougher funny that) and lend a bit too hared on the bit of glass and it shattered.
if i took my time im sure its posibly but not really that nessasary seeing we dont use toughened glass any more anyway..
i conclude that it would be quite easy to cut down a laminated windscreen for roof chop job. lots of tape and take your time. practice on small bit first..

hey ben, that is good news.
I think the grinder would be better for toughened as if a jigsaw bites the upward/downward motion is likely to cause a chain reaction resulting in shattering the glass, where as a grinder is hitting the glass end on and merely shaving the glass rather than cutting.
But in terms of laminated windows for roof chops, this is great news indeed

it was a easy a cutting a piece of timber with jigsaw.
another thing i forgoit to mention.
it leaves a lttle bit of a rough edge on the glass where you have cut but being covered with the rubber it will be fine.

can probably get rid of rough edge with very fine file or even belt sander. hey Ben did you use and water or oil to help keep blade cool or did it not get too hot.

A sharp or rough edge can easily be ground down with a hand held fine sharpening stone.

By toughened glass, do you mean shatter safety glass?
Shatter glass will shatter as it is under internal tension. *I don't think* it can be cut.

laminated glass is just 2 bits of normal glass with a sheet of plastic in the middle
there is a thread on the web somewhere where a guy just used a glass cutter and turps (to burn the plastic) on an old dodge or chev screen
toughened or safety glass is normal glass put through the furnace, tempered to what ever standard.
Ben, all side car windows have to be toughened glass, windscreens have to laminated unless produced before a certain year and the vehicle didnt come out with that option.
Even all the glass around stairwells and pools etc are toughened as toughened is a lot stronger than laminated
when i got my front door glass done for my custom van, one of the corners was to square so they used a belt sander (had already been toughened) to round the corner but then had to retoughen it to safety standards

can you get toughened laminated glass? because i have pulled quite a number of windows out of sides and rear of vans that are laminated. as a matter of fact last van wrecked has laminated glass all round from windscreen to side windows.

a lot of the vans used laminated glass for the side windows but you will find that they crack or delaminate (has like an oil stain colour coming from the edges) quite often.
You'll probably find these are aftermarket windows as laminated glass is real easy to cut (straight glass anyone can) and it could be brought off the shelf in sheets, not many people have controlled blast rooms to toughen/retoughen glass
