Title: Sound Deadener Group Buy Round 2 (Dynamat type product)
Post by: MaTTe on October 13, 2010, 12:02:25 AM
Hey Ladies and Gents,

I am putting together another Group Buy for which I have previous moderator approval.
If you wish to read up on the previous group buy, the thread is HERE (http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?p=3298916)

I again have access to a new product made to the same specifications of Dynamat Extreme:
The details of which are below:

Total Thickness: 1.7mm (70-75mil) Approx (same as Dynamat)
Surface Coating: 0.12mm (5mil) aluminum foil reinforce liner(same as Dynamat)
Core material: black butyl (same as Dynamat)
Back: wax paper release liner (better than Dynamat it doesn't deteriorate like the paper backed stuff which can be difficult to remove)

The product has no logo simply for the reason it appeals to genuine restores, builders and repair shops. As genuine vehicle builders will know, it is difficult to source OEM spec materials, let alone ones without marketing graphics pasted all over them. In my opinion these things can date the build of your vehicle especially when trying to improve it and not bastardise it. The lack of logos also reduce wastage from trying to keep the logos lined up.

How does it compare to "Dynamat"; it doesn't have Chip's head on the box and is manufactured directly for an Australian company not an American one, therefore I can get it at a competitive price. I am passionate about building cars therefor focused on usable quality and afford-ability of product.

Besides the acoustic and heat insulation properties, lining the insides of exterior sheet metal is quite beneficial when it comes to surfacing and paint prep, more so on later model thin metal vehicles. The foil coated sound deadener adds a second skin to the doors (for example) stiffening them up when they are sanded.

Un-branded aluminum coated butyl mat is suitable for the genuine vehicle enthusiast / builder who demands today’s high end performance, without the aftermarket generic branding that can date your vehicle.

Butyl Mat is today’s lightweight alternative to traditional bitumen underbody and inner body dampening. Butyl Mat has a high temperature resistance and together with an aluminum foil coating it works to reduce the transfer of heat and sound coming in and going out.

The package contains
9 x Sheets @ 460mm x 810mm
Total area = 3.35m2 or 36sq ft

Product Specs
Appearance:
Black butyl based core with 4 mil aluminum constrain layer with wax paper release liner
Dimensions
Total Thickness: 1.7mm (70-75mil) Approx
Surface Coating: 0.12mm (5mil) aluminum foil reinforce liner
Core material: black butyl
Back: wax paper release liner

To compare butyl mat with bitumen mat, see below

Butyl Mat

VS

This product retails for $200 per box + $20 shipping which is about $20 cheaper than Dynamat.
I can get the price down to $150 per box + $25 shipping if I can get orders for 25 boxes or more.
I have advertised this same group buy on a couple of other forums to help get the numbers up so we can get this deal even if the numbers are not possible on this forum alone.

The supplier is about to complete production of the next batch, so we should be able to get as many boxes as we need in about 4 weeks or so.

This will suit most people as not everyone has the money or are ready to buy instantly. If you are ready to buy now I will be having to buy in minimum lots of 25 boxes to get the price listed above, although if we have an order for more this should not be a problem. As I said, this will not be a problem for most people, however I though I should outline the situation to prevent any heartache.

I ended up having the boxes shipped direct after organising the shipping from my end which was quite a headache, however it was better done this way than having mistakes made by a third party. This also means you can make payment to me direct so that I can keep track of the whole process personally. The shipping costs varied state to state, so I will give you an accurate shipping cost based on the previous group buy when discussing your order. The highest shipping cost was $30odd to Tasmania, the median price was around $20.

Anyone that is interested is more than welcome to comment in this thread, however when you want to make a firm order I would prefer a PM so that I can get your name and address for shipping, as well as to discuss payment and keep track of orders...

I am willing to accept bank deposits, or cash (if you are in perth), or money orders(if you are not in perth)

If you have any questions not covered above, let me know and I'll attempt to clear up any confusion.

Danc666 from Perthfalcons has been kind enough to allow the use of photos from his install to help gauge the coverage. After the following pictures he had 3 sheets left over

How many boxes did he have to start with?

Hey fellas and Wendy, i'll work my way down..

Wendy, I will be lining part of my van, however my van already has insulation foam covering most of the walls and roof, so my van wont need the coverage of a van that has an original interior. PM sent

Vintageholden, no worries PM sent also

Jesus, good work mate, I am far too slack to do that much maths.. ;) But the numbers look pretty good. from memory I think 6 boxes has been quoted in the past. It basically comes down to how much coverage you want.. You can cover absolutely everything, then build your interior over the top, or you can build your interior and then cover the areas left exposed as wood and other materials will have an insulative effect.
Another thing to think about is that nearly $1000 dollars (going by your estimations) is alot for most people so you can focus on the parts most essential to start with. For instance, do the doors to reduce wind noise and reduce the rattle when closed, do the firewall and engine cover plus cabin floor to reduce heat, then maybe the roof to reduce heat also, and you may get away with 2 boxes. Then you can add to this when the cash flow/desire dictates.

Danc666 had 1 box when he did his falcon, so of the 9 sheets he used 6 to do the inside and outside of the front doors, the boot and the parcel shelf. Most people wouldn't necessarily do the inside and outside of the doors, but if you have speakers in the doors or want the maximum reduction of outer noises then inside and outside are the way to go.

Cheers,
Matte

Warren, no worries.

Vintage, it is a similar product, but is different to the product I am getting. Without going too deeply into the differences I can see immediately that the release liner is craft paper Vs the wax paper that the product I am getting has. The craft paper will be more difficult to remove as sometimes it will stick rather than releasing. This was an issue that was focused on by the company providing the product I will be getting

hey mate, no worries at all.
In the short term, drain all the coolant and replace with distilled water (get 2 x 15L bags from coventrys for $20 or similar) fill it up, get it hot, drain it, do the same 3 times, then fill it up and put a bottle of redline water wetter in. It'll increase the boiling point and increase cooling efficiency

Hey Ladies and Gents, a bit of an update.
The product will be ready in about a weeks time, and we are very close to having the numbers to go ahead with the order.
I will start collecting money early this week so we can place the order as soon as possible as some people want their orders yesterday so to speak.
So look out for a PM in your inbox over the coming week.

Cheers,
Matte

Hey ladies and gents,
we now have the numbers to go ahead with the order. The supplier has another big order so we only have 5 boxes ontop of the boxes that're already confirmed, so anyone looking to buy in this order you will need to send me a PM asap, as I'm still waiting for confirmation from a few people.
Craig, you are currently unconfirmed, so check your PMs sooner rather than later :)

Everyone else already involved, or in discussion currently, check your inbox.

Cheers,
Matte

Davie,
I've seen Matte's van and "pretty nice" is to damn with faint praise!

Great dash, custom body and he let it go "squeal" around the corner when he was lining up for the carpark where we met.

PS - To check out the results of going "squeal' and backing off too early have a squiz at my album - it's on Gallery page 5, Bedford the First, Tree. Kinda gives the punchline away, doesn't it? Johhno was impressed when he saw it!

Cheers,

Garry

Hey Dave, I'm not sure if i was in osborne park on saturday, it's highly likely.. but i honestly cant remember anything before about 2pm..

Garry, cheers for your kind words, was I squeeling the front or back wheels? the fronts tend to squeel a bit, the backs have alot of grip so i try to avoid it for the sake of the driveline..

Man I have a bad memory....

Matte,

Pretty sure it was the rear on that occasion as we had 3 or 4 vans lined up in the carpark at that stage - it had that "Hi boys - I'm here!" feel about it... ;D

I suppose it could have been the front but since the way I remember it has more flair I think I'll stick to it! ;)

I think it probably wasnt your van on closer look, it was the same blue as your avatar but the roof was different.
I am assuming your avatar is what you drive?
It was a LWB clean blue van with mags, but i also had a hangover, I was in the passenger seat feeling sorry for myself for over indulging so I wast payingas much attention as I should have been

Garry, we'll go with your memory of the events, but i think it was loose gravel in the car park causing the fronts to understeer..

Dave, It definately wasn't me then as my van is now white :) Pitty you didn't get a photo

Ok ladies and gents,
I have just made payment.
I am still waiting to hear back from a number of people in regards to still being interested in the group buy or not. There are also a number of people who have been in contact unable to pay for a few days, so I have covered the cost of the boxes for those few people, but those who have not been in contact - at this point do not have a box waiting for them. There are still boxes available at this stage due to these people having had boxes reserved, so in the near future I can probably still get those parties a box (or others if you're quick).

I will arrange shipping to be picked up around thursday as payment will need to clear before I can organise shippping. So at this stage you should all have your boxes in 3-9 days from thursday depending on your location.

Cheers,
Matte

Hey i bought a sheet of dynamat (spur of the moment otherwise i woulda joined the group buy in) to cover my engine cover, and it was just a bit short (pics in gallery)
up to about 60kph it is noticably quieter, but at 80kph the engine is still loud. Prob need to do the firewall and floor to get best effect. Just a FYI

Hey mate, there is another batch due around the 17th of december, so if we can get the numbers together, then im happy to go ahead with it.
As most of the people interested in the group buy were involved in the last one it may take us longer to get the numbers together this time, but we can gauge interest all the same.

If anyone does want to register interest in the next batch feel free to let me know

Cheers,
Matte

Wendy, no worries
Jesus, theres no rush at this stage, the boxes will only be available from around the 17th, but the shipping company goes on holidays on the 17th, so you'll have atleast 2 weeks, but more likely a bit longer than that..

Dano, I'd be keen to see the results of your fitment, and the costing.. Is it the grey stuff that has the various colours thru it? or is it a completely different product?
My van has the grey stuff throughout(and has had for probably 30+ years) but the main problems with mine are that it absorbed water, so then rusted holes thru the floor(due to other leaks allowing the water in) and that is has seperated in the engine bay, so its hanging down in various locations.. looks a little untidy, but works quite well. It has stood up pretty well considering how long its been in there, however I'll be renewing it with some of this sound deadener when i get some free time(after finishing a few other things first) And I'll then compare the current heat transfer to the new product.

I was checking this out on the web yesterday - could be a great base coat underneath Matte's sound deadener - stops rust, noise and heat. I see in Ian's gallery that he's mixed it with heatproof paint to do his extractors and exhaust!

Hey Ladies and Gents,
I apologise to you all, most especially Gary and Wendy for the delay on updating this, the next batch is available and has been for some time - I even promised I'd update this when i last spoke to Wendy weeks ago.. So again, deep apologies.

I did post this on the other forums some time ago, but last time i checked there wasn't much interest, so if anyone wants boxes yesterday I'll get the numbers for this forum together and put an order thru asap.

The supplier also has rollers available if anyone is interested.

I assume by rolls you meant the rollers, as you know first hand the sound deadener comes as sheets in boxes ;)

They are the two photos i have been supplied, as far as dimensions I never thought to ask, but i can find out if need be.
The prices I have been quoted are:
$25 individually
$20 with every single order box
$15 with every 2 boxes
$10  with 3 or more boxes ordered

And as a refresher for those just finding the thread, I have attached the images for the sound deadener below too..

Post by: MaTTe on February 10, 2011, 12:37:40 AM
Hahah Warren, that is gold!

Ben, due to the nature of the adhesive I think you'll be scraping the sound deadener off and throwing it in the bin..
If you REALLY need to reuse, maybe consider sticking it to aluminium sheeting that you can screw onto the floors or walls? or get something that doesn't use adhesive..

Restoreid, you're dead right, for the effort you're either doing it so you can enjoy it long term, or to improve the chances of an easy sale..

i suppose it wouldnt work right if you didnt stick it on either. im sure it would cut down the noise by cutting down the vibrations. which would be all the way through the panel. ok not a good idea:(
