Hi guys, I have a donor VN and doing a full transplant of V6 auto and diff into Alien8. I have to get the holden disc brake diff widened and to do that I need a standard short wheel base diff so the diff man can get the plates for the springs in the right place. currently running a Chev Caprice diff so I am hoping a Brisbane owner might be able to give me a LEND of a non modified standard diff for a short time.

if you get stuck someone could just cut the axle tubes off for you?
-
I have a diff you can have . freebie . pick up on gold coast

Hey julian, mate do you have anymore pics of your van, yours seems to be in the background to alien8, love to see some pics.

Yes George, I do have more pics of the chev, does it matter that I don't own it any more. Have pics of the reupholstering as well.
Julian

Hey julian, no mate does not matter if you have sold it, still would'nt mind seeing it.

i have a set of axel tubes if you need pm me.

Thanks for the offer Ben but I'm using the VN disc brake diff and getting the short side tube taken out and using the long side tube from a second diff put in to get the diff within 1and half inches the original bedford diff size. I need an original bedford diff housing so that the diff man can set the Holden diff up correctly. Will take pics so will post them up when its done.

So Julian does it use two long side axels then, and is the stud pattern HQ or crumadoor ?
Would be good to see some pics - sounds like a simple solution to the beddy diff problem

Hey Julian, You got the fuel tank out of that VN?
-
Thanks to Weasil picked up the beddie diff, today in the back of the Viva, yes it did fit in the boot and back seat down almost into the passenger seat :). Didn't realise how heavy they were until I managed to get it out of the car. ;D
Warren yes have 2 VN disc brake diffs, take the short side tube out, replace it with the long tube out of 2nd diff, Thats the bit for the diff man to fix it in the correct position. The next bit will be cutting about 1 inch off the axle to make it fit. then get a new axle made up so that the splines are long enough to sit far enough into the gears so they dont brake. It then brings the diff back to within about 1 and half inches of standard beddy track. Using the VN front discs instead of HQ because they are about a bee's dick different stud pattern. All the above will be minor ::) ::) ::) problems that can be fixed
Shane yes I do have the VN fuel tank that will go into the beddy, fuel pump inside fuel tank need that or the car wont go fuel injected.

I believe the hq stud pattern is imperial and Commodore is metric. The difference is very slight, but, it is real and the two are not interchangable. Someone may need to confirm my thinking. R
Commodore...120mm
HQ...120.65mm...
Dont mix them..the studs break..ugly..

Commodores use a 5 on 120 mm (4.724") PCD. Very close to the HQ - WB PCD but not close enough. If you put Commodore wheels on an old Holden (or vice versa), you will break your studs and be overtaken by your own wheel...not a good look.
quotes pulled from other forums with discussion on this topic
i have also had personal experience with breaking wheel studs because of this little issue and its not a good feeling.
just warning you.

Agree Ben
Ive had the same thing - but on the bright side Mr SW could use rims suitable for commodores, go to larger diameter rims and have a better selection of tires to choose from.
I'm pretty sure he was going commode on the front as well.

oh sorry i got the impression he was still running his hq wheels.
-
the funny thing is that although the difference between hq (4.75") and commodore (120mm) is less than 1mm, it will break studs,
they used to make mags with uni-lug

these oval shaped holes could fit say ford (4.5") to drag (5") and anything in between (chev/hq 4.75")
on a side note, does anyone know the PCD of the current falcons?

Should still be 5x114.3

hmm, still 4.5" interesting. Why not change to metric like commodores?

from the above I take it that Julian will have VN front and rear, if thats so then using commadore/accessory wheels to suit would be the better way to go, as I said most likely a better choice of rims and tyres that way.
I also think a lot of other cars have the same stud pattern - BMW, Volvo Range rover etc - might find some flash stock wheels cheap.

It is metric. Its 114.3mm

Yes using VN discs front and rear, haven't had a look yet but the calipre bracket should be the same but if not will make new ones. Probably easier to make some new ones anyway, got the pattern for the calipres easy to make anyway.

If you dont need the tank I wouldn't mind borrowing it to see what it looks like under the beddy.
-
Shane should be taking the tank out in a couple of weeks, if you want a lend to check for fit . I'll let you know when it's out. Where's it going same as old tank or under the back. Under the back was where I was thinking of putting it.
-
I'd be looking at fitting one in the factory position and one at the back. The first thing I want to do is look at the V6 tank roughly in position and then find out how much bigger the V8 tank is to see if it would fit ok.
-
Hey shane, when you are checking out the position of the tank for size, can you get some pics of the tank in position ? I will be doing my tanks soon, and was going to get some custom ones made up, but if a VN-VP tank will go in, i may consider useing my VP tank.
george.

No worries mate.
-
Looks like I will have to get the tank out of the VN a lot sooner, I will have it out by this weekend Shane, work out how to get it to you.
Julian
-
Hi mate, I'm going away this weekend for 2 weeks. I'll happily pick it up for testing after that if it isn't used by then.
Thanks mate
-
Shane, the fuel tank is out of the VN, its sitting on the garage floor, so just a call when you get back , i think you have my mobile number.
-
Thanks mate. I'll be back in town on Saturday so might give you a call on Sunday.
