try a holden HQ-WB aftermarket Heater tap,
they are cable operated and you can mount the cable control anywhere on your dash u like.
mount the tap under the bonnet, (not passanger side under dash) as a tap failure could scald any passangers feet n legs.

I got a generic tap from a small car parts place "Oxford Spares" in Perth  it was 1/3 of the price of the aftermarket HQ holden ones and it works OK.

will it last 1/3 the life of a HQ=wb aftermarket 1?

No idea it has lasted about 2 + years now and I only drive city klms so if it goes I will notice hoefully before it overheats.
