Title: fabricating new quater panel
Post by: ben on September 04, 2010, 09:28:09 PM
heres what ive been up to this arvo for 3 hours.

i have not done other side yet. (just as bad) would this be the best way to do it or has someone got a better idea?

i tried to shape the corner piece in one but failed miserably so this is what i did..

and i learnt something. the little ridge in the bottom section thats spot welded is to let water out so go and check to make sure yours is not blocked or your quarter panels will rust out much quicker:(

rust i dont belive it!

Hey Benny why dont you try a bit of metal shaping on the other side, you have all the tools you will need.

A block of wood, some panel hammers and your little english wheel.

Do the main piece as you have, but then use the hammers and block of wood to rough out the shape of the corner section, then use the english wheel to smooth it out.

Search on the web for metal shaping or english wheel demo's

It might take more time to form the panel, but gain time because of less welding and bogging and finishing.

And once you get comfortable with shaping you can make better patch panels.

That's pretty much how I did the instrument cluster cowl for my dash. Used about 9 different pieces to make each corner although I didn't use strips. Shaped each little piece as best I could curving them with a pair of pliers before tacking them into position. Wasn't too worried about a few bumps etc as it's going to be covered in the end so will all be hidden.

Ta. Haven't really thought about it in any major detail but may use a thin foam rubber and then a vinyl leatherette or possibly use some of that insulating foam SundownerNZ swears by and then perhaps some kind of spray on plastic coating.
