Looking good ian. Q. What is the reason for the ceramic exhaust system.

george.

Ceramic coating is similar to heat wrapping an exhaust system. It helps keep down the heat given off by the exhaust system and aids in exhaust flow. I'm looking at doing one or the other to keep the heat down under my engine cover. Some say it reduces the life of the exhaust system and causes cracking etc and is not recommended for stainless systems but I heat wrapped the downpipe on my WRX about 5 years ago and have never had a problem to date.

Hi George, exactly what Rogue Trooper said, although if also painted inside system it preserves your system by preventing exhaust acids from corroding inside your pipe, and the coating really works, I sprayed the coating myself by importing the Ceramic beads from usa (Hi-Tech ThermaCels) and adding to Por 15 brillant aluminium heat proof paint, all instructions come with the beads (I will Paste image in my Gallery latest mods) using a 2.0 spray gun tip I sprayed inside & out plus inside Cowling, you can actually hold the header pipe while motor is running without burning hand (still hot though), thanks for interest, and sorry about my gallery disappearing for a while, happened after buga went offline   Ian

Ian, it is interesting that you say you can hold the header pipes when it's running. Is that just soon after the motor has started, or even after having just been on a spirited drive?
My impressions of ceramic coating were such that you could hold the pipes when at full temp and it would be cooler than heat wrap. We have always used heat wrap on the race car, but on a new set of extractors we had ceramic coating applied inside and out. If we change a head gasket between races I have to pull the headers off - which is warm with heat wrap, but doable. I accidentally touched the ceramic coated headers with my knuckle for less than a second and it burnt me severly - smelled like cooking a steak, turned the skin white instantly, blistered badly.
What I want to know is if this product you used actually works better than the 'professionals' application?

But anyway, the van looks great mate, I'd be keen to see it in the flesh!

Hi MaTTe, I would'nt hold the extractors either MaTTe even with Ceramic Coating, its good but not that good, and Heat Wrap also are a very good product and proberly would do a better Job,  although I'm not lying about holding the header pipe coming off the Extractors about where the centre of Gearbox is, although briefly without getting burnt,  I remember a while back before I coated with Ceramics I accidently brushed against the Vans SS Turbo Mufflers at the same full operating temperature and almost melted myself to them,  although now I can contineously hold them, Further I notice the Extractors after shut down cool down a lot lot Quicker, and less heat coming though the inside of the Van, I don't want to deceive anyone by recommending this product but it is just my personal observation and am happy with the results, as I would imagine the occupents would be in the Space Shuttle!

And I am very impressed with your Van too MaTTe, you're done an excellent Job, My Van is getting close to being on the road, all the Mechanicals are just about done & just some cleanup to do in the interior, I have already got new Carpet and finalizing the swival rear Seats so hope to catch up with you guys soon,  although be patient because I have a Terminally I'll Mother in Law and as my Wife is her Carer my life is not always my own at the moment,  and I dont always get as much time as I wish too spend on my Van, but I am very keen to have her on the road again!   Thanks again for your Posts as love reading them                    Regards Ian

Hi Ian, regardless of what the ceramics do for heat, the finish looks good. Mate, do you have a problem with us recomending your van for the new custom ute & van mag ? I recon it is worthy of being in print. Seeing a custom beddy in print is long overdue.

Hey Ian, cheers for your response. It sounds like this stuff is vastly superior to the 'professionals' application. This may be in part as you have sprayed it on thicker, but either way I am somewhat interested. Was it fairly expensive to order in from the states?
I have a set of block huggers here that have ceramic coating on them done by professionals before I bought them years ago, but am yet to fit them as I want to remake the exhaust before I fit them up so i'll look into ti at the end of the race season. However this ceramic could be handy for the race car exhaust in the mean time.

Ian, if it makes you feel any better it took me 6 years to get my van back on the road.... I just got to the point I couldn't bare looking at it and not driving it, so we finished it up. Theres still plenty I want/need to do, however it is good enough to be on the road for the time being

Good to see you're moving forward in leaps and bounds despite any delays between efforts

Cheers,
Matte

Hi MaTTe, My feelings also, can't wait for my Van to be on the road, also,  For 1 Gallon Ceramic from Hi-Tech cost $11:95 usd & $44.95 Postage which came to $62.66 aud, I still had plenty of Ceramics left over,  For Ceramics to work you need to follow instructions carefully, I appied 2 coats within 24 hrs inside & out with a Gravity fed spray gun with a 2.0 spray gun Tip, the Por 15 heat proof alumineum paint you can buy Local, (Westcoast Auto Supplies, see Adele) - 1 Litre aluminum Heat Proof paint cost $160.00, I had quotes to do my exhaust system although would cost into the hundreds hence did myself, hope this is some help to you Matte and hope to catch up with you one day
Regards Ian

Hi Bedfordcrazy, thanks for the compliment, Craig (Obsession) has been in contact with me the last few weeks discussing this very thing as he had a lot to do with these Magazines and gave me a contact number for me to call,  so lets see what happens in the future?    Regards Ian

Ian those prices are very reasonable, we paid $300 to have the headers coated, now granted that is the shiny chrome finish, but for the money it would have done the whole exhaust with left overs and cash in our pockets.
I'll definately speak to grandad about it.

Much appreciated!

Thanks for your reply MaTTe, There are some Ceramics around that are NOT original, make sure they are very White and not Grey, I have not tried it yet but you could use very fine 1200 grit sandpaper and polish it, although I liked the suede effect and did not bother,  if you send me your address to rrekvi@three.com.au I will post you what I have left over for nix, should be enough to do a complete exhaust      Regards Ian

Hey Ian, thats very generous of you, however I'm more than happy to pay what its worth. I can even pick it up somewhere in the not too distant future provided you dont live too far away from the city.
At the very least it will be good to test out before buying in bulk!
Cheers,
Matte
