Hey guys, i'm looking a long way down the track here, but i thought it won't hurt to ask a few opinions now.
My Beddy is white, and as i'm a construction worker, i'm surrounded by white vans every day of the week so i flat out REFUSE to leave her white.
So a paint job is in order, but what colour?
Looking through the gallery, i like Bullstik and Sweet Shock's Red, Stumpy's Yellow, and of course Mezzmo's Green
These are all really in-your-face colours that scream "look at me" and i'm sure command a lot of attention.
However with good attention also comes bad attention, and as my van will be a daily driver, it well spend a considerable amount of time (at least 8 hours a day) parked on various construction sites.
Do the in-your-face colours that scream "look at me" also scream "smash and steal me" to all the low-lifes out there?
I was thinking perhaps a nice silver or gunmetal (like Noid's) is a bit more subtle, and will blend into car park scenery, rather than standing out like a dogs proverbials. And perhaps will not be such a target for thieves.
So, if you were to paint your van tomorrow, what colour would you go, and what would be your reasoning for your choice?

Hey jesus, this is a very simple Q. to answer. Whatever colour takes your fansy, what you like, thats what i am doing, in my case mine is a show van, and i pray it gets a lot of attention. lol. Q. 2 these days there are some really cheap security systems on the market, i dont mean cheap crap, cheap as in a lot for your money. In your case for less then $400 you can get satelite tracking that rings your phn and 3 others if van is tampered with, if they get your van you can shut it down remotely. Also these days you can get really cheap cameras that can monitor your van, and capture your vandles ugly mugs. And there is option 3 if you are worried about your van getting damaged or stolen, you could lock it away with a state of the art security system. I have an 06 landcruiser as my daily driver, i have an alarm / imoboliser and a steering lock and so far lucky. Mate as someone that worked on construction sites back in the 70s and 80s and delivered to construction sites just b4 my crash, these days the security involved in just getting near a site is unreal. Mate at the end of the day you can live in a cacoon or just get out there and enjoy your van, as a retired PI and security officer, if you use common sense, you dont park in redfern and you dont leave the car open, take precautions and you should be ok.
Just a foot note if your working through the day you should be ok, afterall most scum bags dont get out of bed b4 1400hrs lol ;D ;D ;D

Thanks George, Call me Aaron,
Yeah the construction sites are generally safe, unless i piss of the other trades and they're out to get me. But i'd also go shopping now and then, and my local shopping center is in a pretty average area. (I don't know if there is an interstate-ghettos-conversion chart, but Elizabeth area is a bit average. I live in Gawler which is quite nice, so i have no concerns when its at home. I've left my current car unlocked overnight by accident, and i've not been bothered.
I see so many nice paint jobs, its so hard to pick a colour. I'm leaning toward green but i don't wan't people to think that i'm 'copycating' Mezzmo

:o Hi Aaron when ever i go some where my van is centre of attension but never tryed to break in(touch wood) most poeple wait around to talk to me about the van. Allan

hey aaron, mate it has taken me about 10yrs to come up with my final paint job, i have also changed it at least 6 times because i have seen other vans with the same paint. Whenever i drive i am looking for ideas for my van. 3months ago i was trying to nail down my tail lights, i saw some on a car, liked them, so when i got home pulled them up on the pc, then rang a few contacts that deal in lights, and they asked me if i wanted factory or an upgrade, when i saw the upgrade that was it, to this day i have never seen these lights on the factory car or any other vehicle. Again it comes down to what you like, if you are worried about copycating, when it comes to grills, look at how many vans here have the XA - XB - XC grills, when i looked at what i wanted up front, i went for something that i have always loved, and i know that there is not another van in australia or NZ that will have my grill, for now lol. I want to unvail a van that is mostly different to all the others out there, yes i have copied 1or2 things from other vans, but 90% of my van is imagination and a LOT of sketching. To me bedfords are freedom to do what you want, like and will be happy with, some on here are daily drivers and some are show, but their all different.

George, I want to keep my van looking pretty stock on the outside. Standard grille, lights. Probably flares and jellybean/dragway mags the only thing different to when it rolled out the factory.
Inside is where i'll have a bit more freedom and be a bit more creative.
If you've changed your colour 6 times, what colour is your engine bay / interior?
Should i paint it a generic white / grey / black once, and leave it that colour, irrespective of the body colour?
-
Hey i saw this on the net and fell in love instantly. Thoughts?
-
sex on wheels ;)
-
I think they are the standard jellybean mags. And just a 'Scooby' kit?
-
yes its got no side windows ;D ;)
-
I noticed that pickmeup thanks. I just mentioned in the other thread that i'll now consider leaving the windows as they are... not there
-
it looks grey too..
-
Yeah i got that feeling too. This is what i meant by a subtle paint job. In the cars native environment, the carpark, it will blend in nicely. But when you look at it closely, you can see it looks really nice and not outlandish
-
Just my two cents...
Paint your van in the colors/scheme in which it will bring you most satisfaction. Your obviously embarking on this project for your love of the Bedford , because it brings you joy. And if you end up painting it in a color your not 100% sold on, it will niggle at you each time you see your baby. In saying that, it might take you a while to decide on your destiny =) Don't worry about copycating, if we Buga's were concerned about anyone copying our pride and joy - we wouldn't post pics / share knowledge about our vans =)
George is right, security is easy to work out..If you put a decent alarm on your van, you will be able to hear it while on the construction site, even if the van is not in your direct sight..And an imobiliser can be fitted, as easy as wiring up a switch and hiding it somewhere in the cockpit / or engine bay..
BTW, it's not a "scooby kit" on that Van. If you want one like that, ask Ben for a 5-piece flare kit. Have a look at his post, showing all the moulds that he has available.
Don't know if I've helped here, but good luck mate ;D

Send me a photo of your van and I will photoshop it with the colors you want. 8)

Yeah Mark B, it think you've kinda hit the nail on the head. I'm worried that if i pick a way out there color that i wont like it. I was talking to a mate who's doing up a HZ Kingswood and he's thinking of a bright yellow. He could pull it of, because its a standard size vehicle. The side of a Beddy with no windows is like a Billboard in comparison and if the color is out, even by a bit, your right, it will niggle at me and i won't enjoy my baby.
I guess i wanna play it safe for this first one. I'm not saying that i'm compromising with the grey, it was on my original shortlist, but its harder to get grey wrong.
Outriding, I've had a bit of a play with Hue/Saturation on Photoshop but it's still not the same as seeing a van painted. But by all means look in my gallery and have a bit of a play. (Put some jellybean mags on it too if you want because thats what i'm planning)
Thanks to all you guys, your input has been really helpful so far.
I did have one other question, what colors are all your engine bays (in relation to body color?)
-
Gray is such a dull color, you better add some sort of lines or pin stripes to give it more personality.

-
A shiny metallic grey would look good though.
-
Outriding, thanks for that, i agree it look's dull as a matte finish but i think it'd be very different metallic
I'm thinking of using chrome, rims, bumpers, mirrors and handles to add personality.
Possibly Black from the door bottoms down
-
id go undercoat grey personally. much easier when you have a prank he he and you still have that nice matt look:)
-
haha good one benny ;D
a simple pin stripe can make the world of difference...mine cost me like $10 from autobarns and it makes me smile everytime i look at it..it really lifts the matt black and goes with the monza red grill and roof spoiler..have a look in my gallery..if i did it again i would probly get the double pin stripe..
if you are spraying yourself, a matt finish is easier to pull off than gloss..i've never sprayed a car (or anything as large for that matter) and i'm pretty happy with how it turned out..not purrfect but it makes me smile..

Watched Sex drive on dvd and it had a pontiac GTO 'The judge" on it

I still can't decide!
It changes so much in different lights.

Go Mental, check out some magazines from the 70's both Australian and the U.S.A., bring back murals, metalflake and real pin striping. Talk to the guys from "House of Kolor" as a Beddi is a big canvas, they might want a promo vehicle

I am going to paint a single colour, but i was sitting there looking at my van recently, with a pic of the colour, and then it hit me, this is massive, so i am still going to go with my first choice, but i am also going to add some ghost murals to break up the wide open space of colour. You will see the murals but they will not jump out at you and be in your face. Once again jeff, its what you like and want, here is a suggestion, pink with purple poker dots. ;D ;D lol mate there is no right or wrong.
