Title: knock knock
Post by: delrazor on June 18, 2010, 11:43:32 PM
In the last couple of days my van has developed a knock in the front left wheel.
It is every revolution and is not subtle. I went back to the tyre place and they took the tyre off the rim to see if there was something inside. Nothing. they balanced it again and put it on.

Next i went to the brake place to see if there was something amiss. Nothing really showed up inside the drum.

Next I pulled off the hub nut, checked the bearing, races and regreased and re-assembled.

Next I shaved a little off the ends of the spigot wheel nuts as it looked like they were a tiny bit too long, preventing the wheel from being bound evenly to the drum. Noise continued.

Put the old wheel on with the old wheel nuts. Still noise but quieter.

Swapped the two front mags. The noise may have changed sides, but I was delirious by the time i drove home and had my window open, so who knows.

next I raised the front wheels and spun them. Unlike earlier in the day, the noise was not detectable in either wheel. Only under load.
I kind of ruled out ball joints etc as gently spinning the wheel up on the jack would still make a considerable knock each turn.

naturally I would have been asking questions earlier but the site was down.

Has anyone experienced this knock?
can an out of round drum cause this without any noticable shudder under braking?
Whats wrong with my beddy?

cheers

check the long bolts that the wish bones are bolted to they are cast and some times the bolts holding it break or become sloppy .

Had a problem like that myself a while ago, a persistant knock on the left hand side, found out it was a broken suspension spring caused maybe by the rough edge of the roads? regards Ian

make sure your bearings are done up tight..

Yeah, i'll take another look at the bearings.
when the wheel is raised off the ground and turned very slowly, the knock is still audible once every turn.
to me this may (not convinced) rule out some of the other components outside of the wheel bearing and brakes.
For reference, what is a good torque setting for spigot wheel nuts (no taper, just washer)?

I am off to unadjust the brakes and see if it goes away

Have a look to see if the wheel weights are not hitting on the disc caliper

I had that problem on a CF I had once. I thought thought the diff was broken.
It turned out the shank nuts holding the wheels on were too long, causing the wheel to rattle under load.
Extra washers fixed it.

Ah yes I suspected that and shaved down the nuts on the offending wheels. (go to town skip).
I'll do the rest of the wheels soon and feel a bit more comfortable about it.

hope jeffs suggestion is the cure raze my good man. .  as the only way i know ( for  sure.) to get rid of beddy gremlins, involves half a pint of holy water, wiv 3 peeled garlic cloves soakin in it in a plassy squirter bottle, one must be, & i cannot stress this point enough, dressed in nothing other than their socks & an authentic wooden juju mask to boot!! liberally douse the offending gremlin infected areas with yor blessed beddy squirter, whilst hopping around ( on yor right foot only ) left leg extended straight out, & mutter loudly over & over. ."oogidee boogidee eeebee geeby eureka" prob a minute should see the little bugaG gone. . hey no knockin till tried please. .it worked for me  ;)  ;) granted i live in the middle of nowhere, so hope your workshop does not face out onto smith st raze  ???  ??? as this method can only be done  at a particular time, being 12-30 pm any weekday arvo after your last full moon till it has waned.. oh yes and all the doors must be open  ;)  ;)  ;)  ;)  ::)

Thanks Skip.
The embarrasing thing is I went through all that last week and stupid me used shallots instead of garlic.
Oh well start again.

Today I shaved my nuts.
No more knock.
While I was at it I found the rear brakes were binding. I un-adjusted them and it runs better. The brakes are now a bit soft so I may have to get them machined.
