Title: beddydore
Post by: BusyKiwi on May 26, 2010, 06:54:20 PM
Ok I have followed the lead and brought myself a VN Calias holden commodore with the V6 ...

Am going to put the running gear (and maybe dash) in my standard CF

So instead of a BedFORD, I guess it's a beddydore  ;D  :D

Rogue, don't worry, this is the standard van, not my custom one. I need the standard van as a daily driver as I have to many vehicles here - 2 vans, car and motorbike, need to get rid of the car

means time off the custom van but will hopefully give me a decent daily driver

Actually I was just meaning getting the V6 up and running as mine hasn't really moved since I put it in after Xmas although I'm held up a bit with a lack of cash to get the diff in. I need to recondition the brake calipers (already have the new discs and pads), buy the power steering rack (as that is being fitted at the same time as the diff) and then I can get the diff sorted. After that I will be working on getting the motor into some sort of conditon for starting. Still, on the positive side it does give me more time to spend on sorting out the interior.

Bit of time off the custom will probably do you good anyway. Gives the brain time to recharge.

I think it's about $180 to get drive shaft done

Don't worry Rogue, I'll get the standard van running but may have to strip the engine down, has a bit of a tap going on (could just be tappets) but if the cash is there might give it a birthday

Mine has a tap going on too, but when you put the foot down it goes. ?

mate over here got charged 300 for tailshaft mod!!
Title: Re: beddydore
Post by: Rogue Trooper on May 28, 2010, 06:02:08 AM
If you have a tapping then it is probably more than likely the the timing chain tensioner has destroyed itself. The VN engines were notorious for it. I replaced mine while the engine was out of the car. Use a later model one as they were of much better construction.

Actually 'replace' is probably the wrong word to use. It was just no longer there. Found the remnants in the sump while I was replacing it which is how I found out what the tapping was.

Hay thanks Rouge, yea having trouble to find out where its comming from, shounds like top / front of motor, it's not there all the time, idel is ok, bit of a rev it comes and goes while you drive though the gears, when I pull it out, well wheel it out will have my mate / greace monkey have a look at it. You're welcome. It's a bit of a sh1t because the bottom of the timing cover also seals against the front section of the sump so you need to be really careful pulling the cover off so as to not munt the sump gasket othewise you might have to replace the sump gasket as well to avoid oil leak city. Other than that it's a complete doddle to replace when the motor is out. It didn't matter to me as I was swapping my sump anyway.

Lots of good stuff here on the V6 Buick motors...

Cheers Rouge, just took it for a long drive, gee these motors are just right for the Beddie, Mine is more of a rattle as I paid more attenion this tiime, so may be somthing different as the motor is a tight fit Its a bit hard, wiil give the motor a good going over once its out. Cheers

No Probs David, will PM my numbers so you can contact me first if required, theres a few things I would change, but the setup fitting is all ok, the motor sits forward and the sump has not been changed, so sits above the cross member, but still seems to sit quite low in the van. Bas

conversion is going well.

Because the fuel injected motor I had to either modify the bedford petrol tank or just use the commodore one, I choose the latter. just brought 90 degree pipe (2in) and got the radiator place to put in a new filler pipe. Took the hooks off the bedford straps and welded on the commodore straps, other end just made some brackets for the threaded bedford hooks. the commodore has built in pump and suits the fancy stuff on dash so all should be good.

Am converting the diff, using commodore centre with bedford axles and housing. The weird thing is the diff I had in there was a cresta (pinon at least) at 3.7.1 gears so could of been a bitsa.

Bas, I did have to cut the floor back to the gearstick hole, yours is way forward because of the power steering. was still good to see though.

The exhaust I used two cobies and ended in front of the rear wheel, hopefully will be quiet enough.

Still got a bit to do but getting there.

i got the old 3.3, trimatic and aussie assembled front beam with engine cover to suit on tardeme if anyone is keen

David, who is doing the diff ? will slot engine holes in the mounts and move motor back alittle to clear the gap from the fan when I do the change over.

David, next time you are around there, can you ask him if he can work on Dual Wheel diffs, Thanks Bas
Title: Re: beddydore
Post by: ben on July 01, 2010, 06:26:07 PM
there should be no reason why he couldnt..
Title: Re: beddydore
Post by: BusyKiwi on July 01, 2010, 06:41:06 PM
that price is for the work, you still need to give him the bedford diff and other diff you want the head from. He reckons early falcons are the better ones but commodore are just as good as both have many ratios. No cutting and welding of the axles so really there is no reason to get it certified ;)

its still a fantastic price i recon:)

Hey bas, I asked him today, sadly he doesn't do dual wheel diffs as they require axle re splinning etc which makes it way to expensive
