hey wraithknight, you guys still have a big custm van culture over there, do you or other kiwi's have any classic old 70s custom van pics, anything we may not have seen here in oz, your custom scene seems to be bigger then here, most of our vanners are daily drivers now.
george
-
Custom scene isn't huge here either anymore. It seems to be the same vans at the shows these days.
I've got some photos although the majority aren't great as most of the venues were inside and the lighting wasn't great. Also they were from the late 80's as that is when I got involved.
Have to do some really stupid hours early next week at work and most of it is just waiting around so I'll see about using some of that time and will scan anything that looks like it would come out reasonable and post that. How does that sound?
-
This is what it's all about, I tell my girl friend i'm going to check out my porn every night, and she knows i mean this site, custom vans are mmm mmmmm
-
sounds good wraith, we have a handfull of real custom vans here also, and it seems to be the same ones that show up at shows. This is why i am trying to build something completely different. As we all know there are a lot of the same grills out there that guys copy from each other, so when i decided to do my van, i looked at what was not out there, and i'm doing something 100% original to a beddy. This is what i am doing for 80% of my van, there will be a few bits that are on other vans, but for funtionality i am doing them. I am hoping that for the first year at least when people see my van, they will be seeing something not seen on a bedford b4. The down side to having my imagination is, it all takes longer and more expensive, because you are doing things not done yet. The one thing that wont change though, is that beddy shape. We are putting the new grill design to steel this week, something i have been waiting for for years. We look forward to seeing your pics wraith, i recon there must be thousands of pics out there in peoples albums, one day they may all see the light of day again.

I am a big fan of the custom vans and that's why I love this site because of the vast amount of different mods and looks that people have done. One thing I notice about our van when we first took her out of the body shop most people look confused and even asked what is it? That's our fault because nearly everything on the body was modified so I put the Bedford badge back on the bonnet just to help people work it out.
What about you guys in nz do you have the same problem where you have modified so much people don't have a clue what it is?
-
sounds good wraith,
We look forward to seeing your pics wraith,
???

It doesn't matter. Even when you say it was a CF Bedford you get a blank stare. ;D The wreckers list Bedfords under the 'Ford' heading on their websites and I gave up trying to get parts through the Holden dealership years ago because every time I tried I was either asked 'what's that?' or was told that it wasn't a GM vehicle ::)

LOL yeah I can relate to that I rang up rare spares a on day and asked for a price for a seal kit for the van and the guy on the phone must have no clue because he was telling me that my van was a transit. I think I know what my car is. And finaly got a guy that new what I wanted, then I asked for new door seal kit for my old cf 71 swb sliding door van and he told me that there was no such thing that I had a transit not a Bedford LOL I swear I wanted to jump through the phone and rip his head off.
-
It's always confused me, you put a 74 bedford and transit side by side, and the bedford was the best looking body shape, yet everyone remembers the transit. Maybe it was the ugly headlight bulges, made it look like a frog, but even now the new transit, still has an ugly front, and the rear looks like a house brick. The beddy had all nice rounded edges, everything seems to flow.

Ask people if they remeber the old icecream vans - thats a beddy.
Transits are still being manufactured today, thats why people remember them more - adds in papers etc
Warren
-
thats what i tell people icecream vans are bedford vans and mail vans are transit vans
-
or even scooby doo, that's how my little cousins remember what the van is because of the one at movie world
-
hey guys, the movie world van, is it the same one used in the movie ? or is it another one ? if it is the same one, my mate was hired to build the movie van, he had to make it look LHD to impersonate a yank chev, he used to work as an engineer for bedford here in oz back when they were bought out from england. I went over to his place one day back in 97, and he showed me his 5 acre property at bardon, he had 200 vans there, thats where i stopped counting lol, he had a lwb van he was working on for a company near frazer island, he had to make it stretch, and make it 4x4 for the dunes. He took me inside the house, underneath was closed in, and in one room every wall was covered in those little draws, nut and bolt draws. When bedford stopped selling here, and the place he worked for shut up shop he bought all their stock. In those draws, he had every rubber, washer, screw, ball joint, you name it he had it. I wanted something for my rack i think it was, he ran his finger over the draws, stopped and gave me, brand new the part i wanted, it was like being in a dealership parts shop. Awesome day. The downside here, he had just got divorced, and a week after i was there, i saw him and he told me, while he was out, his ex sent a mobile crusher to the property and she managed to crush 87 of his vans b4 he could stop her, if thats not vindictive i dont know what is. Let me tell you guys, we have a lot of switched on guys here, but this guy he could tell you every milimeter of a van, how it was built what it looked like, how to modify it, all without pauseing. He actually worked on a lot of the custom show vans from the 70s. I will dig up the pic of the stretch he was building when the crusher moved in, and post it, yep my camera was going to town that day. I lost touch with him after the crushing incident, i know he moved, that guy could solve every problem we have ever had, a walking bedford encyclopedia.

-
wow yeh would like to meet this bloke! 200!! gee wouldnt like to be moving 100 vans eh
-
hey ben, mate to hear this guy talk bedfords, was something else, the trick he used to build the scooby movie van was just unreal to listen to as he talked. Here are 2 pics i took at his place, the one under the shade cloth was the 4x4 van he was working on, he completely re engineered the running gear, and so you know, when transport looked at his vans, they never knocked him back. He knew their rule book better then they did, i tell you, i wish he was here now, i could use him on my van, he did electrical, mechanical and body, when i knew him he was a bedford mechanic, thats what the yellow van was there for. The other pic shows my van [bullbar] in bedford heaven. Back then i was still useing a film camera, if i had a digital i would of had hundreds of pics.
george.
-
hey george, i think i've taken a pic of that van last year

not looking too good.. its over at south maclean
-
gidday mate, well it certainly looks like his van, i think after the crusher episode, he did little or no work on beddys, as i said i lost contact, partly because i ended up in hopsital just after that, and lost touch with most friends for a while. I'm still meeting old friends now. Do you know his name ? If you know his address can you email PM me, believe it or not I am just near him, if it's him. I see all the front crossmembers are in order so you can find them. lol ;D we used to go for a walk through all his vans, show vans and vans in all conditions, i think i would need to get a 4x4 wheelchair to look at them these days, if its him.
george.
-
Maybe you could find him on FaceBoock ;D :o ::)
