Title: axel question
Post by: ben on May 05, 2010, 09:15:01 AM
hey here i have 2 bedford axels, 1 from the 9inch drum diff and 1 from the 10 inch drum diff.. you can see by the plate that holds the bearing in.. but i am not tottally sure the 9 inch axel is untouched.. i have seen 5 axels like this but they have all been out of hwy diffs..

can anyone confirm to me that its a standard axel? mezzmo i know you had 9 inch drum axels in a standard diff.. were they exactly the same as this? oh 9inch drum axels are 25 spline.. the 10inch ones are 21 spline..

doing the reasearch cause id like to make up a jig to convert hwy diffs.. after craigs inspired me:)

the one im not sure about is the rusty one 9inch 25 spline axel

hey ben, are you sure they're both bedford axles? the rusty one looks alot like a holden axle, the plate shape is the same as a holden, and i know of a type of holden axle that shrinks at the end just before the spline..
Doesn't mean that a bedford axle isn't similar tho..

I have a 9" in my HQ Statesman, it was made to to accept HQ drums, the axles are 31 spine and look just like the non rusty axles in your picture,
ahh also one of the axles is really short compared to the other as the input yolk on a 9" centre is offset a couple of inches to one side.

I could just be making things a little more unclear for you, but hey maybe it's of some help.
 :) :)

sorry matte, definatly a bedford axel.. ive seen 5 of these but all from hwy diffs.. look at the stud pattern from the back.. and length of the axel

but that gives me a great idea matte.. if i can find a holden diff that has the same spline then i can use that centre with these axels without modification.. or use the side gears if the axels were used with a borg wagner i can interchange with a later model commadore centre which has the right ratio for holden 6:)

well if no one knows on here ill asume that its standard because what ive seen

hey Numnutz, someone i know used both long axels in there 9" to get extra width of there bedford.. still not as wide as a beddy diff thou..

Hi Guys

Holden fine-spline Banjo - 23 spline
Holden small Salisbury - 23 spline
Holden Large Salisbury - 28 spline
B/W VK6 & VL N/A 6-cyl- 25 spline
B/W VL V8 & Turbo - 28 spline
B/W All VN onwards - 28 spline

Some Crewman Cross8 & late One Tonner axles are 30 spline.

yeah the rusty axle is a definate bedford studpattern but the bearing retaining plate looks like its holden, has it been a cut n shut diff useing holden diff housing axle end cases?

it is standard plate.. came with the 9 inch drum axels the housing on the diffs are different too to match..

and you can interchange them also, ive seen a 9 inch axel in a 10 inch housing running 9 inch drums??

it may be the same as the holden but its standard bedford thou.

remember Bedford was part of GM.. general motors bedford UK

holden is GM also.. General motors holden

quite possible some parts are interchangable because of the close connections between bedford UK and GMH

it looks like the axle plate on my borgwarner diff conversion,
so i take it not standard?

they are both bedford axles, regular has 25 spline 27diamater, 4 bolt retainer plate.  heavy duty axles has 21 spline 35 mm diamater 6 bolt plate.  and no borgwarner side gears are interchangable with bedford.

what about this on john??

B/W VK6 & VL N/A 6-cyl- 25 spline..

ive herd a rumor that there is a side gear that fits both and if its gunna be one it would be this one i think

might visit the wreckers tommorow to make sure.

even if its not broaching is not expensive.

cheers

Ben the side bits you talk about, is that the spider gears? Cos when l spoke to Dennis Smith, thats the diff bloke up here, he said something about the vl turbo diff centre and then something about the machining of the spider gears or axles alittle. l'll try and catch up with him over the week end. lf l remember correct it was something about the pitch on the spline

well im off to the wreckers to check it out:) vl turbo is 28 spline.. so that would ned to be machined.. but im gunna try the 25 spline vl standard 6cyl spider gears/ side gears
