When you say "Ready to bolt in" are you saying that it would just slide str8 into a swb beddy? or that its basically just not a V6 block?

What condition are we talkin?

hey kirk, trust me mate it wont just slide straight into a swb. We are doing mine as we speak, and i wish it would just go in. You need to fit new engine mounts and cut the floor. I hope mine will be in place by thursday night, friday, so if you want this V6, i will let you know how we go, how easy, or how hard. lol. When we cut out the floor, i will be doing templates for every part of the engine install, and will be happy to send out a copy of templates for members here, that need them.

Hey George, did you buy the conversion kit or are you doing it from scratch?

hey mezzmo, kirk, i bought a donor car, VP 93 Series 2 for $400, and got a conversion kit from moree for about $1,500, and as we are finding, the lack of instructions from moree are making the job harder. the hardest part is where to locate the new mounts. we could weld them in and cut them and reweld, but what a mess that would be, so looking at the pics from moree, we are guessing. I hoped to be done today, but monday seems to be the closer to the day now.

Hay George, van came today, no conversion kit on this one, same sump, sits above cross member, firewall cut at mid point down on both sides, V6 motor sits low, Will take a picture of the  mounts, soild as, power steering looks like Transit, but is not? power steering sits out in front of the motor not under as normal, but works well. Power SH..T I have had a couple of 8s, but sorry guys this is unreal on the power side, I am thinking the chip has been upgraded because If I plant my foot the van just sits there with the back wheels doing 80ks, will take photos tomorow if anyone is interested. Yes the floor George, it is not cut past the lip. Cheers. For those that have seen the photos there is room for the left foot, but feels better placed in front, the Air box sits up under the van on the floor.

Hey Bas, looks good, I might try pop around.

If you guys had the option of the later model Holden V6 or later model Holden V8, which would you choose and why?

I was messing around with the old 202 (3.3) and lpg, they are good engines but not the cheapest to run, so am thinking about going something else. I've been offered a V8 but I don't know if I want the fuel bills of a V8 for the standard CF.
I love the van, just want a cheap runner.

i'm with you Busy, everyone that drops into my mechanics has had an opinion of how 'stupid' i've been on fitting a 6 instead of an 8 - they just dont seem to get that i want a cruiser, not a racer!! Being a complete commodore drive train it will be a shit load cheaper to run and i believe a shit load easier to repair if need be.

not necesarily . . i had a HQ for a few yearswiv a 202 in it done a zillion kays in it wot a  petrol/gas guzzlin beastie it t,was. . updated (lol  this woz round 1998  ::) ) to a HZ wiv 253 an 2 throat strommy i think an 1 u didnt have to put yor foot nto it to get to cruisin speed ,an 2 went through less juice n gas  than me old HQ herc ever did. 253s are more economical i found ,if u didnt give it any teddy. different story if u fanged it, but even then prob used the same  as hungry herc, but a lot quickerer, thats why prefer an 8 ,definatly gotta loose the holley 4 throat for a twin throat to stay economical but, still found the power ok , an i like the sound betterer  so moi,s opinion be. . 8 is great mate. cheers

i think the v6 is a great option..

on the other hand you can get the same econ out of a v8 as a 6 with the right gearing..

my 307 van achives better econ than my airbrushed swb with a 173.. both on gas. but the 173 is reving a bit at 100 because its so weak and it has to..

when the 307 has a 4 speed auto behind it so it purs at 100..

cheers
ben

hey guys, there is one thing that no one has mentioned yet, and this point helped me to go with the V6. I have a landcruiser 100, V8, and love the growling V8 sound, I just hate the growling V8 rego, up here we are looking at $1,100 a year for the cruiser.  That stings. It might be cheaper in other states, but combined with $1-40 ltr for fuel, and almost a $1000 a year for insurance, owning cars are getting somewhat a luxuary item.

Hey marty, stand by and i will give you a list of parts for the V6 conversion kit.

I got my conversion kit from Moree as well. As far as i know, the guys had very little trouble fitting up the V6 (to their own surprise) It came with all the bits including the wiring harness and even a template to make up the engine cover.

its cheaper to rego a v8 beddy in vic than a hyundi exel buy 100bucks a year. so that would be why george.

400bucks a year. for a registed 2 seater in the country..

500bucks a year for reg 4 seater in country (same as excel)

600bucks a year for reg 4seater beddy in the city

your in the wrong state george..

beddy capital of aus vic:)

hey Bas, nice van, when you do the underneath pics can you try to catch a reference point for us to follow, we will be dropping my van onto the motor on monday morning. From the pic of the inside, it looks like we do have to widen the hole, but could not tell if it was longer, a side shot showing the seat boxes may help. Is this van decked out inside ?

no argument there ben, got my light bill at 1300hrs yesterday, $800, and by 1700hrs, dearest anna bligh announced our power bills would be jumping a whopping $200 a year, or $50 per bill. This because she has bankrupted the state, she could'nt organise a hooker in a brothel, but the morons up here keep voting her in. At the rate we are going, when i do finish my van, i wont be able to afford to run it. lol

g'day George, i got a mate of mine to do it who works on all my cars. Dont know how well it would have gone if i just walked in off the street to someone i didnt know.

It hasnt been a cheap jog though - we're looking at 8k+ but thats including a full engine and transmission rebuild and a custom radiator support etc etc etc- sounds stupid i know but hey, i want to be able to get in this baby and drive anywhere at anytime and in comfort!! Having said that, i opted for the aircon instead of the Power steering -

One things for sure, i wont be selling her in hurry - i'd never get close to my money back!!

If you guys had the option of the later model Holden V6 or later model Holden V8, which would you choose and why?

I went with the series 1 V6 from a VN because apparently they had the most torque available out of all the Buick based V6's which is what you really want for the van. They are relatively simple to fit especially as the wiring loom to the computer from the engine is a complete loom you then just have to wire up the feeds from the dash components and trans.

Also the early V6's (NZ models) had no Catalytic Converters as we still had leaded petrol back then and the CC's don't like that so no O2 sensors to worry about either.

Although the Holden guys don't like it the series one had one of the main feeds from the radiator run around the side of the motor. See one of Bas's pics. This is great for mid-mounting as it keeps the feeder pipe nice and low.

Another thing of note is that the 3.8 V6 actually has a few more Kw's available than some of the V8's and they are very well known for being an economical motor. Even more so than some of the later models. There are also shedloads of parts available and they're cheap. Pick-A-Part always has at least 2 or 3 in their yard.
