Hi
I need to do brakes and suspension.
The brakes need total overhauling including drums.
the suspension needs all the rubbers replaced and I want to add a sway bar front and back to level it up a touch through cornering.
power steering would also be nice if it is available.
where can I get parts from?
is there a list of suppliers?
What about wreckers?
I am in Melbourne
Thanks
Steve

In another post you said you had a "Brick" possibly based on a CF(S) does it have the cabin or is it a winebago style full coach body ?
The reason I ask is the the CF vans have a sub chassis that is an integral part of the body and the CF trays (from my unerstanding) use the itegrated rails under the cab and chassis rails after that.
Do you have an "I" beam or an wishbone style front end this might help you determine whether it is based on the CF or som othere Bedford Truck chassis.
What part of Melbourne are you in because that will have an impact on the answeres you recieve.
As Bedfords of any type are rareish nowdays, and most have been butchered to some extent most places wont have a clue what your talking about, but the best way to deal with this is go to a good local automotives parts store with the bits you want to fix/replace as a lot of brake and suspenion bits are interchangeable between different manufacturers.
As an example those brake slave cylinders might be found in a ford or holden sedan etc.
Pictures will help us better identify your van so open a gallery and post away.

The van is a full coach built unit like a Winnebago.
the front suspension is independent wishbones
the chassis is a one piece item and is stand alone.
I live in South Morang but I will travel to wherever I need to go for parts.
thanks for the help Warren. Pics will be posted shortly.
Steve.

OK Steve waiting on some Pics.
Although if the frame is "Stand Alone" it may not be a CF, unless some one cut away all the cab.
Hope we can help more once we see pics.

I am hopefully going to get it up on jack stands this weekend to start running break lines and wires. I will definitely get some chassis pics. Is there anything in particular I should try to get?
thanks again

Rear suspension
I talked to my dad who originally bought the chassis during the late 70's I think.
He said it is a CFL 3500 weight. I don't know if that is any assistance.
I will try to take more pics of the chassis once I get it up on better stands.

The good news is that the front end is definitly a CF, but the motor looks to be sitting higher and further forward than in the vans.
So parts for the front end shouldnt be a problem.

Thanks Warren.
The motor is fitter to a 4 speed, non synchro box which was probably OEM. apparently it was a 4 cylinder and first a 161 was put in. That probably explains the location.
So where can I get parts for it? do you know of a wreckers who do bedfords?
-
your better off to source brake parts new rather than second hand.
bedfords never came out with swaybars but there are some after market ones available. i have one here if your interested pm me. power steering is only possible if you know someone willing to do some custom work to modify mounting brackets and bits and pieces to fit a rack from a different vehicle.. best off to search for that on this site there is quite some discussion about it in different threads.
cheers

I would recomend a few cans of ozone depleting head spinning petro-degreasers and a waterblaster.
The manual is handy but not essential (can 'loan' you my CD).
Make sure you have some axle stands and some hand cleaner,
All the suspension bushes are available, pedders, super-pro, etc,
I see alot of new brake shoes and a few new front brake hoses on ebay-uk,
Cylinders can be relined, rubber kits on ebay-uk
I would say you would have to find second hand drums ( or go disc but that's a whole 'nuther story, which would sort of slot in nicely with a front end rebuild ), and for them ask ben :D or the wreckers (centre road, springvale, no thongs :D) or ask us.
Bearings i just take to a bearing shop and get replacements.
There are bound to be a few washers missing, and probably a nut or bolt will have 'fallen off',and some will be almost worn through where they were rubbing.
Always replace with high tensile,
Most of us have a few spare parts in the garage (i have 6 of those metal rings that are pushed into the back of the steering wheel to cancel the indicators ;D).
The shocks, monroe i was recently told about $150, and pedders heavy duty $250.
The bracket that is under the shock tends to wear out but can be rebuilt fairly easily.
Ball joints you can get but i'm not happy about the lifespan of some of the sealed ones with no grease nipple >:(
Top balljoints you need circlip pliers but keep the old clip that holds the rubber on as the new olnes have a wound spring clip that is harder to get back on after you have removed the rubber to push it through the wishbone.
Likewise i find the top rubber bushes are 'easy'(relative to how stuffed it all is) to replace.
Bottom ball joint needs a press ('ive bashed the crap out of a few of them, best not too ::))
Likewise the bottom bushes, there is a danger of damaging the steel bush sleeves ad/or damaging the threads ::).
The bushes on the struts are available, and while you're under there replace the oil pump gaskets, put some dope on the oil pressure sender thread and probably replace the side cover gaskets and rocker cover too, ;) it looks as bad as my one.
sway bars are not standard nor is power steering

Hey MerlinSteve,
Well about 6-12mnths ago i had all my drum brakes redone, as well as front end rubbers. I have to get 2 shocks for the front and i was advised they can get em for about $250 the pair (rough guide by Repco courier at workshop at time) they are sports shocks (means jack to me)..
The brakes were fully done, sandblasted and painted....cost L (from my budget sheet)
Brakes Plus 7/03/2009 $1,000.00 Brake Lining F + Back, Front and Rear wheel cylinder assembly
Brakes Plus 23/7/09 $1,200.00 Master Cylinder and New brake lines, and labor charges for work
Brakes Plus 8/06/2009 $550.00 Front cross member paint and blast, fit bushes and ball joints and underbody degrease
Brakes Plus 21/08/09 $200.00 Battery and Ball joints
Dates are just days i made the payments.....the ball joints Craig gave me were apparantly no good...and the boot had to be removed to get them in, but to be frank they may have just buggered it up and billed me). (they did show me, and i was convinced enough not to feel ripped off tho, but hey i dont know jack anyway)
Now im in Melb btw, and i can give you the name and contact details if you like, as mine took a while (was paying them off as we went along) the van was in front window for ages, they got a fair bit of bedford work from it, so id be confident in saying they shouldnt have problems sorting parts, etc (brakes wise)...and after service was fantastic.. (fixed a prob with my mums car on spot no charge (i did spent over $3k tho...probablly felt guilty...lol)
****NOTE*****NOTE****NOTE****
I will not vouch for the work YET tho....purely because my van hasnt been driven since getting it from workshop, it does stop, and handbrake is brilliant (i live on a steep drive way) but no front shocks and loose front means i cant say for sure the work is brilliant....HOWEVER i am 100% confident that should my van be running and there were to be a problem (even outside warranty date) they would fix it no charge (assuming brake related)....Cause he is upfront and honest and seems genuinly to care.
Any questions let me know:) (please note...that discription is MY description...as he broke up my payments, so it maynt be exact amounts for each job)

P.S: dont worry bout dates...think my spreatsheet is a bit whack..lol But dates without the 20's are correct i think) as a rough date line (ie: its not 15yrs ago..lol)

thanks. I am going to check out the wreckers as I need new drums... discs

I am going to borrow a pressure cleaner and really hit it hard with degreaser. As I am going to be replacing bushes, I will take everything off and wire brush it too. once I have removed all that gunk and hence lightened it by half a ton!!! I will repaint everything.
this could take a couple of weeks though.
thanks again

Steve ...That is the way to go mate. Cleaning stuff down and repainting is one of the more enjoyable tasks that i find with my cars. If i have to work on a vehicle then i want a clean canvas to play with.!!!! ;D

Guys,
I had to get new rear handbrake cables for my LWB CF and I was lost as to where to buy them. The answer was simple really. I went to my local clutch rebuilding company and he makes them from your sample. I never thought of it before but he uses the same principle as when he makes clutch cables.
Anyhow If you need new handbrake cables or clutch cable contact Wright's Clutch Service in Lismore, NSW He does great work.
Cheers
