Title: the dark side - do something quick
Post by: delrazor on April 29, 2010, 09:53:32 PM
Two weeks ago I bought a F&%d TR@$%T 79 LWB , virtually free and lots of rust.
While preparing myself psychologically for the repairs and buying various tools etc. something has been niggling at me.
I am a vintage scooter mechanic. I work on peoples 60's and 70's Italian scooters in collingwood. every week i plead to  people who are looking for a project to make sure they start with a model they really want.
Yesterday on my way back from the rust converter shop I saw a rather stuffed Bedford and my eyes glazed over.
so, the point is, I need to be convinced (read sold one) to turn to the Darkside before my trans$t bill gets so high that I am committed to it.

perhaps someone who has been hoarding a straight but basic van without rust who was on the cusp of putting it on the market might take pity on a misguided bloke and make the decision to sell it to me. The budget is low, the skills and patience are OK.

I have a basic ford courier one tonner (94 I think) on duel fuel that i would sell to get a registered Bedford, so a swap wouldn't be out of the question (value maybe around $4000 ish)

The clincher will probably be the forum community and attitude towards this marque.

Cheers

You could just rip one of the yuppies riding a vespa off and sell them the transit, leaving you with enouth money to buy a show van ;D :D (just an idea)

Hah, none of my clients is a yuppie. I only deal with obsessive owners and lovers of a classic marque (a bit like you lot).

Question: How hard is it to put auto in a 202?

I have only ever seen one ford transit lwb van that was a bloody nice ride ,and that is the white one that comes along to our W.A runs .
Craig knows the fellow and his wife. But if you get a beddie you will be liked by all that meet you and chicks will dig it!!! ;D :D

Come on PMU spitt it out :D

I have seen a few good transits, but to my eye the Beddies are just so much nicer in shape.

Derek finding a beddy without rust will be a bit hard but worth the effort.

There is a V8 LWB one in Hallam at the moment - see the for sale section

Thanks mate... hows Croydon these days. I worked in the 'Sally Boyden' when they made it into a big night club '84 I think.
I am now tempted to go SWB and change the tranny myself just so I have more of a choice.

A QUESTION FOR THE PANEL
if I had a 202 motor in a van and wanted to convert to auto (with overdrive), what would it cost and who would do it (melbourne)?

Who is the master for Bedford brakes (drum) in Melbs?

cheers

The 202 to trimatic conversion is pretty much a bolt up option, but they dont have overdrives.

Later model boxes may but then you might need a different bell housing.

Maybe the "Old Holdens" site might have some info on this or a decent Auot trans place might know.

As for Brakes - cant help you

you can get an apapter to run the turbo 700 v6 gearbox but it cost more than the gearbox:(

tempting.
Take a guess at the cost of the converter and the gearbox.
I am not all that experienced with these things but i can imagine that they would be quite revvy on the highway given that they are made as commercial vehicles.

If I rolled into my local mechanic with a tranny (trimatic) in the back, what do you think is a fair price to put it in?
If there is some floor cutting to do, is there a template so I can cut it out and install the t-bar in preparation?
Is there a standard way of raising the t-bar to make it reachable?
Last question in intro section I promise.

trimatics dont have overdrives. but the turbo 700 does. but it has a different tailshaft yoke and needs an adapter plate which i think is a bout 400bucks. tranz should get a good second hand one for 100 - 150? tailshaft mod could cost 200bucks? cause it needs rebalancing also.

plus fitting maybe 300 - 400?? totally guessing but may give you a rough idea it wont be cheap..

nice buy on the beddy. its a good one that one ive seen it.

trimatic don't come out overdrives but you can add one - it's called a laycock (overdrive) unit, can even go on manuals
