Title: Exhaust Systems
Post by: Bedfordcrazy on April 02, 2010, 11:45:53 AM
Hey Guys, here is a new Q for the aussi vanners. Q1. does anyone know what the exact rule is for exhausts, when it comes to dual exhausts, the qld transport pdf says, pipes must exit at rear or RHS of car, BUT i see so many cars around with side pipes, exhausts coming out both sides, so what is the rule ? are all these cars taking a chance ? or is that pdf out of date ? I see mustangs and other muscle cars with side pipes both sides. Q2. Back in the 70s early 80s if you wanted a throatier sound to your exhausts, hot dogs were the go, back in 2000 I had a new exhaust fitted to my van, [ 186 red ] and they fitted a sports system to my van, can you still buy hot dogs ? or is there something that replaced the dogs ?
George. ;D :o oh yeh, happy easter, if you have to drive do it safe.

It is a very out of date law that was implemented in the days when horse and carts where still around. The theory was that having the pipe on the RHS kept it away from horses on the curb being frightened. It's certainly not relevant any more, but I have heard from one friend of a cop actualling booking him for it even though it was an australian production model! He went to court to contest it and the fine was dropped.

When I had a Transit van, I fitted side pipes and it passed RWC no worries.

when we fitted our exhaust we were told if it didn't come factory with side pipes then the law was the can not exit less then 1 meter from a opening door or window but that was told to us in albury so it may very state to state

While we are talkin about exhaust's a must do for all v8 beddy's, heat wrap on the extractors, I did it when we changed over the auto and it is probably the best thing we have done to cut down the amount of heat coming into the car and it works like a dream don't sweat at the lights anymore

you can still get hot dogs, and with the side pipes, the pipe must exit the vechicle 6 to 8 inches pust its last opening(windows, doors or rust). lake pipes are illegal unless they were factory fitted and all pipes must can not be under the body line unless that is standard to the factory spec... these are the basic rules in victoria with out getting into epa crap, l hope this helps George

thanks rossie, glad to hear that hot dogs are still available. The sort of side pipes I am considering are like this.
Mine will be flush with any body panel or steps like this, and in front of the rear wheels, on both sides.
 George.

They will look flash ,with the hotdogs, i got a couple on a old fairlane i got in the shed, they give it a nice note, i origanaly used them to get the epa of my back but they didn't take the noise down lower enough ;) :'( so i made a new tail pipe.. lt dropes from 2 3/4 to 1 1/2, it makes the old girl sound like a hoover on steriods and runs shit but it works. l'll bedoing similar to the beddie, but the motor won't be any where near as radical
