g'day all,
new to this forum and must say some really nice bedfords around the place, top job! currently in the process of restoring a 74 cf350 and have discovered that the rear and side doors swing back too far and threaten to damage the body of the car when the doors touch. Is there any mods or stock door stays that i can install to prevent this happening? Did the original bedfords have a system to stop this? any info appreciated, cheers!!!

welcome bro!
from what i see the side doors did have a thingy that popped intot a rubber thingy but you cant get them any more anywhere. and if you do find one they are perished:(
best think i recon is to have an old seat belt cut up and pop riveted or something similar to the door and pillar to restrict the door(s)
cheers

wow never see them here in aus!

The rear doors are meant to have little spring steel things that hold the catches in position so that the doors cant open all the way out.
-
ah yes i think i know what you guys mean, anyone know of anywhere i can find these catches and things?
-
barn doors came with 2 types of catches. one was a pin throw system (early models think) and the other just 4 catches.
which one you got?
cheers

which one you got?
I think thats the problem
he don't got!
he has a 74 cf350
-
yeh but i need to know which ones he should have lol.. i suppose its a bit hard to tell hey.
-
is there a simple mod?
the back doors don't stay closed (broken/welded hinges don't help though :D)
i think most of the problem is that the doors slip lower, so the top catch pops when the van twists slightly
-
Hey ben, do you have some of these stays in stock by chance? My van doesn't have any, but i'd be more than willing to adapt something.. i was thinking fo designing something myself, but if you have original parts it will work out easier..
-
stays?
-
the part that sits inside the door frame, and extends outward as the door opens, to regulate how far the door can actually open.
When someone took the hinges off many moons ago, they put both the top hinges on one side, and both the bottom hinges on the other side, this means that the drivers side rear door can touch the paint, so i really need to make a system up that'll stop this being possible, if you don't have any original bedford parts, i'll customise it..
-
yeh i think i know what you mean. and yeh i do have some of those. the pionty things yeh? that bring it out to a certain point then if you want it to go all the way you need to push them and they go all the way round yeh?

Hey ben, this is the sort of thing i was referring to.
My doors dont have the provisions for this, they have some sort of thin fragile looking flat metal hook, but the system here looks better. If you or anyone else has some photos of both the original systems, i'd be keen to seem them.
-
That system will place a lot of twist on the door and pillar, so they need to be strong when the wind hits.
I was wondering about fitting a van back door strut to the top of the door, and maybe draining the gas out. It looks like CFJeff has something similar on his.
-
I have a couple of those hook things in the shed, They came in a box of parts with my van.
I wondered what they were,
Later today I'll have a look to see if the whole setup is there.
-
Jeff, thats a good idea, i have a couple of the gas styruts off my old BA falcon boot, i can attach one very easily, i was thinking a far more complicated system before..
Numnutz, i'd be keen to see a photo of the parts as an idea of what was originally intended.
Cheers fellas

Yep I removed mine from my back doors during the rebuild as they swug right round when the wind got up at shows. As they were at the height of the top edge of my tail lights when they swun round at full force it chipped the paint and left a rather nasty mark in top of the tail light moulding. So this time round I removed them completely and cut up an old seatbelt and pk screwed it to the back door and pillar. This used to be done a lot back in the hey days of custom vanning.
And on my side door I have mounted a gas strut and drilled a hole in it to degass it. this holds the door open at shows and prevents it from swinging round to hit the passenger door mirror which also leaves a nasty matk in the side door paint work.
Cheers Jeff

The back door hinges are about the only part of my van that work like new. From memory they look like the diagram MaTTe posted below and have never blown shut. They only allow the back doors to open 90degrees unless you bend the thingy, and then they van fold right back into the paintwork, if I allowed this the dents would only make the dented panels match all the other panels.
