Title: Soad Blasted Beddy
Post by: mezzmo on September 10, 2009, 12:29:43 PM
Now you see it now you dont!! Cany believe how happy i am with the soda blasting - went to have a look today and was stoked at the fact that apart from my original repairs, there is no rust in this baby at all!!! just a few little dings.

Still a bit more to go but she is getting picked up at 9.00 Friday and being taken straight back to the paint shop for her new clothes - so fingers crossed, she'll be as green as in about 2 to 3 weeks - life is good!

Wasn't cheap, worked out to $2400.00 - but and this is the big bit - you have no idea what is under there and as it turned out, i had 9 layers of paint with the base coat starting to crack. I would have wasted a lot more time and money if i hadnt done it now - mind you if i did it first it would have only been about $1600.

Such is life!!

What do you mean if you did it first you would of saved $800?  One day this will be the way i'm looking unless I strike a deal with Ben

What i meant was he would have only charged me $1600.00 if i hadnt had it all sprayed in high build putty - that was the hard part to get off!

Jelousy is cool Doofhard - drives our passion and motivates!

Well $1600 to get it to bare metal like that seems good value

Looking good Mezzmo

That looks pretty good and fair price. I used paint stripper and sanded. It took two guys about five days to get it clean in most corners. The soda blasting does the tight spots much better.

Ive been quoted $1000 to sandblast, with the condition that obviously certain parts are thin metal. is that expensive? (this is complete, inside and out and under and over), i dont know if he will primer it too tho.

PERSONALLY i wouldn't get the door skins, back guards etc or any really large panels done, just stick to the lower parts and underneath etc, floor, firewall, just the stuff that has plenty of meat. big panels a no-no, as craig said   warpage  is the word  ;D

i agree - did my homework on this one and would never go the sandblast on a beddie - panels waaaaayyyyyy too big and will easily distort.

alot depends on the sandblaster a smaller operation is always better (mostly) cause they are not so industrial minded I had the chevy glass bead blasted and it was great.

I was worried, im sure the guy that owned it last did sandblast it (at home himself) and i think thats how it got the little pin holes in the gutter area (not in the drain part but along the side of roof).

I do think it needs to fully go back to bare metal after sitting in the rain with windows open for 3mnths tho.....now mine is in primer, do you think the soda blast could be cheaper, and if i remember correctly from my research, sodablasting leaves a protective film on the metal.....is that correct (obviously not a long term defence).

iv'e got a portable sandblaster that i use glass beads in so gonna use that with a combination of paint stripper first and then blast it clean, but only on the solids bits of the bedy, will hand strip the larger panels by hand ;D

soda blast and sand blast will give you two different types of results . soda blast strips paint and light surface rust , sand blast strips every thing . sand blasting big panels can be done with out warping it all depends on the operator . had an old chevy at my work soda blasted had bad surface rust had to get it sandblasted as well to get rid of it. lucky i didn`t have to pay for it  :D
