can anyone tell my how many speeds the stadard bedford wipers have?if any?
Im looking for some switches for a custom dash...
-
Just 2 slow and slower ha ha
-
haha thanks. 2 makes it easy.
is there an easy replacement motor from something else that makes it any better?
-
One of the Kiwi's did a conversion to a ford, i think. Its on the old site with great pix that show how to do it.
-
i was thinking using an AU headlight switch for the wipers and one for the headlights.

I did it. I will transfer the info over, just bear with me....

Ha ha! I replaced mine with an EB ford Fairmont one. Probably the same as the EB Falcon. Got some serious power now! I'm wiring mine in to use the Fairmont wiper switch but there is no reason why you couldn't just select the terminals you need to connect it up to the Bedford switch depending on whether you have a 2 speed with intermittent or just a single.
Bit late now but I'll head out to the garage hopefully tomorrow night and take a pic seeing as it's currently lying in the back of the van. I think I had to redrill a couple of holes and packed one of the mounts but it's solid as a rock.
Oh, the motor is smaller and mounts at the same angle as the original so there's no problem with room for fitting either.
What I'd really like to know is what success people have had with replacing their wiper arms with units from other models.

If you have a look at the picture below you can get a good idea of what I did.
I redrilled most of the mounting holes. Make sure when you get the motor that it has the rubber mounting bushes with it. I used nylock nuts to bolt it all together for 2 reasons. Yes, one so they wouldn't vibrate loose but the main reason was so I could do the nuts up but leave a little slack to prevent the rubber bushes from being compressed.
Take special note that the top LH nut and bolt are reversed. There is a reason for that as you'll see in the very bottom picture. Also the top 2 mounting points were packed with a couple of washers to allow the motor to sit square with the arms. You'll see why when you come to do it.

Below is a picture of the other side. The small arm that bolts to the motor spindle will just push on as is. No drilling required. Make sure you get the nut that goes with the spindle when you get the motor.
Of special note is the RH top bolt. This is the one reversed in the previous picture. This bolt has to be reversed and about half of the head ground off so the small spindle arm mentioned previously has enough clearance to pass over it when the wiper arm is in operation. There will still be plenty of meat to hold the bolt in place so long as you don't get too carried away with the grinder.

Also grab both sides of the loom plug if you can. Then you can alter the CF side of the loom to suit the Falcon plug so if you ever have to replace the motor it should just be plug and play as if you had bought it that way.
This conversion is well worth the little bit of effort involved and you'll be really surprised at the power of the wiper motor compared with the original.

fantastic work Rogue thats just what I needed!!

I've just got hold of the wiper motor and amabout to start fitting it as in Rogue's instructions (great work there mate!)
Has anyone got a cheat-sheet on which wire does what or do I do it the good old fashioned way and nut it out? :)
Cheers,
Garry

Great idea Rouge....Did you notice if there was much wear on any of the rods from the bedford?
-
Rods? Which part would they be?
-
The ones that pivot from the wiper motor ;)
-
Mine were all fine but then my van is quite a late model and hasn't had a lot of use in the past 15 years. ;)

tried getting the motor out. undid eveying but cant get it 2 come out. is the only way 2 get it out is 2 remove the instrument cluster?
-
is the HQ-WB wiper motor the standard unit on the bedfords, or is mine a modified unit?
Either way, mine runs the HQ-WB wiper motor..
A later model ford would be the go tho ;)

All I did was undo the bolt on the motor tunnel/firewall and the big ringnuts on the wipers themselves. Took a bit of a tap with a soft hammer on the wiper stems to loosen the assembly and out it came.
The wiring still has me stumped though and I can't get the new motor going - no movement at all. It's got me wondering if I've bought an ebay dodgy.
-
I remember when I cranked mine up off the battery and I was testing it for the first time that it was a bit tricky. I thought mine was stuffed too at first. Sorry but I can't remember off the top of my head what the connections were and the motor is stored away in a box right now so I can't grab it and have a play.

No worries Rogue - if you happen to have a middle-of-the-night "gotcha" just write it down for me!!
I'm about to have another crack at it and hope blind luck will work where brainpower ( ??? ) couldn't cut it

Ask a 16yr old while they still know everything! ;D

Hi All
Firstly a big thank you to Rogue for posting his pics and instructions for the Ford Farmont EB wiper motor conversion. I sourced the same wiper motor yesterday and followed Rogue's fitting instructions and it fitted like a charm. Now all I need to do is figure out how to wire it up. Thought I would resurrect the original thread in the hope that someone out there who has done the conversion managed to work out the wiring. So I've checked out the original Bedford wiring and the colour codes are as follows:
Black wire = earth
Red/green wire = Speed 1
Blue / green = Speed 2
There are some other wires on the switch side that aren't in use on the motor side namely:
Yellow/green which creates a closed circuit with red/green when the switch is in the off position.
Green which creates a closed circuit red/green when the switch is on speed 1.
That is half the puzzle done.
The Ford motor has 5 wires too.
Black = earth
Black/purple = ?
Purple/white = ?
Blue/yellow = ?
White/blue = ?
Does anyone out there have the answer to the second part of the puzzle?
Cheers Gordon

yea, get rid of the extra wires on the ford wiper ;D
Will look at mine, it's VN looks like a straight fit as well.
Ok forgot I have the VN loom as well.. sorry
