Title: To Scoop or not to Scoop?

I have a bonnet scoop for my beddy..the one modelled off the WRX shape....

I was just about to start work on installing it..ie crimping the holes in the bonnet etc

when my mate whos been a Mechanic for 40 years..said " youll just end up filling the engine bay with water


Has anyone got a pros n cons for having the scoop

Pros-
.Looks fat!
.engine has more access to cold intake air?

Cons-
-Bonnet may rust easier..water gets trapped in scoop etc
.more water on engine..electrics..down onto firewall etc

 ???

Marky, I had a few with scoops.
The angle of the scoop abnd weather u carry it through into the engine bay is the diffrence for me.
Never had an engine flood but the annoying thing for me is that they crack on the side where u attach to the bonnet.
Tried allsorts of diffrent ways even soldered it(thanks dad for nuthin) but it didnt work.
But they do look good! I would do it again.

mind u 2-3 bonnets with different styles and same paint change em when u get bored.

Depends how you do it. If it's for show then just blank the front off, paint it black and then put a mesh over the blanked off part. Leave it silver or paint it black it'll look the part. You don't have to blank it off flat. You could leave a bit of the opening intact and blank it off furthur back. Just make sure the water it'll gather in rain can escape.

One of the tricks to preventing them cracking is to bolt them to the bonnet instead of moulding it into place. If you're going to use a WRX scoop why not get the whole bonnet from the WRX then cut out the mounting and weld that into place on the bonnet. Then the scoop will just bolt into place like it was still mounted on the car.

it wouldnt crack if you glassed it on would it?

ive had bog crack all the time. but fibreglassing stuff on it cant crack.. i suppose you could put matting in the bog also if you thinned it down a bit. not sure how you thin bog down thou lol. could prevent it from cracking.

im gunna knock a mould off the bonnet i have in the shed (one in gallery that looks medieveil)

should be a bit mad maxy hehe
