Title: Which seatbelt
Post by: hotrod on June 08, 2009, 08:58:33 AM
Gidday. Which seatbelt is standard in a beddy, retractable or not? only reason I ask is I was having a look/play/dream/fiddle with mine (the beddy that is) this morning and realized it has retractable's.
Seem to remember post in old site about retractable seatbelts and people not sure how best to fit them and others sending in photos of theirs, is mine standard? as I think it looks factory!
FYI it's a 1977

I dont think they made retractable belts in 77, they didnt come out till the mid 80's in anything as far as i remember.

The old's bought a top of the line Statesman in 82 and that had manual lap and diagnals.
I would very much doubt a commercial van from 77 would have retractable belts as standard.

Cheers

googled retractable's and found the following
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=XVo&tbo=1&tbs=tl:1&ei=e2YsSvbPGpKUkAW8j93qCg&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=retractable+seat+belt+history&spell=1 (http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=XVo&tbo=1&tbs=tl:1&ei=e2YsSvbPGpKUkAW8j93qCg&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=retractable+seat+belt+history&spell=1)
from what I can find the VJ valiant (1974) was one of the first aussie/nz cars fitted with them so as silverado says, wouldn't have got to a commercial van til 19?? (beddy) Does the mark 2 have them?

My '83 has them.

My 84 has them also, but I doubt anything english or ausi built pre around 79-81 has them.

The yanks were using them in lap form from around the mid sixties, but only on upper level models.
The european and english manufactures didnt catch on for very a long time in real production terms.

I think you can safely assume that the belts have been added to your 77, a bonus for you.

When I went through the process of getting seat belts, I done easiest & safest way... Called the professionals. There is a company near where I live called Seat Belt Specialists, and they are mobile.
Bloke turns up, installed, fitted & working perfectly within 45mins, no dramas. Even got to choose the colour of the belt...
He had the longer stalk bases which bolted into the original threads in the floor, and the retractable bit the same. No modifications of where/how anything mounts. Which in my case meant it was automatically "Certification" approved. The thing the fella mentioned he was using the "longest" belt they had due to the extra length of the seat height. See below.

Hey Joel looks good mate, nice seats, have you allowed for the slope on the floor with your bases if they rotate.

Im just fitting some roatating bases i was given "from a Delica van" I had to build the back mount up 2" so that the seats are level otherwise when you rotate them to the rear. you fall out lol.
Im sure you already know this, but someone else on here may not.

I was also able to mount my seat belt buckle to the seat base, so it rotates with the seat, which is cool.
The Delicas were set up that way and it keeps the floor clear.

yup, if i put the seat forward the belt is too short. The missus can't drive it because the belt won't fit.

I wonder just how much it would do with all that belt to stretch before it stops me.
Wouldn't stop the steering column going through me, wouldn't stop me hitting the windscreen , but might keep me inside the van?

Not the seats don't rotate... So no need to worry about that...

Not sure what you mean Worzel?

the seat belts stretch heaps.
this means there is a bit of give in a crash, but there is soooooo much belt out on a bedford (floor up to shoulder over lap back to floor) that it will give alot before it stops you.

ehhh, waddayaganna do? better than no seatbelt

oh ive never thought about the fact that normal seat belts are too short.. all my belts come out of beddys so they are all good length..
