Hi Guys and Gals,
Need some expert advice here. I have purchased a disc brake front end from Castlemaine Rods who were very helpful but unfortunately, they're closed this long weekend so i cant call them for advice. This is where i hope you guys can come in!! I will put up some pics (below)
Pic 1 Is the plate on the right way round?
Pic 2 The original beddie rear bearing
Pic 3 The original bearing now in the new disc hub - does this look right?
Pic 4 The original bearing cap/cover is too big - what do i use?
-
Pic 5 You can see the difference in size
Pic 6 Original Front wheel Bearing
Pic 7 Sits proud of the hub - Is this right
Pic 8 Bearing grease cap adaptor
-
Pic 9 Bearing Spacer - i know the chamfered edge goes to the bearing but it still looks wrong
Pic 10 Rear Wheel Bearing in place as far back as it can go - (i know it need to be packed int the hub - i was checking the fit)
Pic 11 When the hub is placed on the spindle, it seats o'k but the centre of the hub rubs on the bolt heads - "doh"
So as you can see - i need a lotta help and advice here - thanks guys.

I'm assuming this is for the HQ conversion.
The plates are left and right and each should have the word 'Top' or 'T' stamped on each one. These should be fitted so the caliper mounting holes point to the rear of the van.
Have your discs been altered? The discs need to have the centres ground to allow the new bearing cups and bearings to fit.
There should be no rubbing of bolt heads as they should bolt through from the rear of the stub axle. The bolts in your pic are screwed in from the wrong side. Also be aware that there are 2 different sets of bolts depending on which type of HQ caliper you are using.
Have a look at my post here from my disc conversion. This should contain a lot of answers.

I also sent a document through to Shane for the new 'Technical Documents' section that probably would have helped. If your email address is in your profile I'll send it to you although I would have thought it would have come with the conversion kit.
Nope, just checked. PM your email address to me and I'll send you the document.

hi Rogue - thanks for the quick reply. The bolts you are referring to i put back in the way they came out - so your saying i need to reverse these? if i did that, wouldn't i have the same issue, if not worse with the nuts rubbing on the back of the disc? Also, i did put the plates in with the T to the top and the caliper mount holes to the rear, but is the welded spacer facing inside the van or to the outside (roadside)?
-
There are no nuts to fit. The holes in the mounting plate are threaded. There should be only a few millimeters of thread protruding from the plate on the disc side well clear of the disc.
The taper side goes towards the bearing. There should be a gap between the outside of the washer and the disc to allow the grease cap adaptor to fit. We had to make a larger washer for mine as I have the facelift model and the stub axles are larger.
-
I can see the confusion - have a look at my plates - including a zoom of the hole - definitely no thread on mine. Also, do the spacers face out or in on the plate?
-
Oh dear. You have a problem then because they should be. Might be a call to the rodshop on Monday I'm afraid.
I think the spacers are fitted to the inwards side but don't worry about that. It'll be immediately obvious when you come to fit the calipers.
-
Thanks Rogue, long weekend here so i'll have to wait till Tuesday - no big deal. have a good weekend.

If you take a look at the link I posted above you will see I have already done this.

yup, that plate should have threaded holes, it has the right ref.no. written on it

So at the risk of repeating every question ever asked on this topic.
Exactly what did you bring over from Ausi ??
The backing plates is that it ??
HQ dics are plentyfull here, so did you get these locally and then machine them out for the CF bearings ?
Why are we bringing backing plates from Ausi, if someone carfully traces them for us, we could laser cut our own.
Cheers

It's a complete kit so it contains backing plates, grease cap adaptors, caliper spacers, all the bolts etc.

HQ discs are easy enough to buy off the shelf but the calipers are starting to get like hen's teeth as they are used for a lot of other vehicle conversions as well. The HQ is a very old vehicle now.

You could but there aren't that many people doing up van's and wanting brake conversions and with the shortage of calipers and the hassle of actually bringing a kit over then finding an outfit to make a template and other bits , paying them for their time on top of the kit in the first place as well as hoping that you might make your money back if you can find enough people to take up the conversion it's not really worth it.
-
Hi Rouge
I was sure the HQ caliper was a fairly generic part i beleive, dont think they designed a caliper specificly for the HQ model, but i could be wrong, the're a mad lot those car builders.
So whats the cost of a kit in Kiwi dollars all up ?
Thanks Rusty
-
The cost will have changed as I bought mine when the exchange rate was quite favourable. I'm pretty sure they have a pricelist on their website so you could just whack that through a currency convertor.
Have no idea what shipping was. My memory is crap. You could flick them an email and ask what the cost is for shipping although the last time I flicked them an email they were less than helpful.

McQuoid Engineering in Auckland does the disc brake conversions kits, he used to do a lot of CF conversions but is now slowly getting out of it

Thanks Rogue

where you saw me ;)
I'll be seeing him tomorrow, will ask him for a price
-
I asked him, he said he prefers installing them but would do a kit for $750 which basically is the caliper plate, bearings, dust cover and HQ discs machined (you supply)
-
just in case anyone in aus is contemplating discs front and rear heres a bloody good start

and the saga continues..........
I got in contact with Glenn from Castlemaine Rods and sent him the pics that i posted on here - he got straight back to me and told me there had been a muck up and asked if i could repack and resend everything back (at their cost) so they could rectify the issues - i have to tell you guys, Castlemaine Rod Shop has been nothing but helpful all the way with this conversion and they didn't hesitate at accepting that they "@#*^ed Up".
In today's times it is bloody hard to find people who will offer service like this so i cant recommend them highly enough.
i'll keep you posted on the outcome!

Great to hear Mezzmo...At least your not left out in the cold ;D Let us know how you get on.
-
Mezz, have delt with them from NZ as well, and the service was the same. Could not of helped more if they tried.
-
castle main rod shop is no longer selling conversion kits for beddies. i just got off the phone from them. obviouslty nor drop axels.. ben
-
Hey ben, I was expecting this, I got a set of caliper brackets late last year for my conversion, it was about the same time the original owners sold the shop, i heard rumors that they were dropping some of their lines. Another van assistance place down the drain. For those that need a contact for brakes and the like i can post my contact here in brissy. I got all but the brackets from these guys, they did the machining for the HQ pattern on the rear. They do sell the brackets, they were just out of stock.
George. ;D
-
yeh my mates a mechanic and he gets alot of parts from the rod shop and he said also that the original owners sold up
-
thats too bad ill see if i can find the paperwork they sent me because i replaced my brackets a few years ago it had a scale drawing of the brackets with measurements. so ya could make the bracket plate and just get the discs machined to fit original beddy bearings. may be a copyright issue but if they arnt gonna sell them any more they can have a sook.
-
hey cav, i have a 1:1 scale drawing of the brackets, that came with my kit, i can post it if you like. I will scan it today along with the cards for my supplier here in bris, and post it over the weekend. It appears companies like rod shop dont want to do custom, i will bet they do what everyone is dong, unbolt and bolt on. I guess any hope of another VANCRAFT is just dreaming. Oh well.
George. >:( >:( >:(
-
hey george i wasnt around when van craft was around. what did they do other than fibreglass parts?
-
used to be almost everything ben inc air cons, all spoilers bubbles bedford tinted tail light lenses wheels archway plans visors you name it.
-
I was John Evans 60th last Saturday - "Mr Easyroller" / "Mr Vancraft" one very talented dude!!
-
hey ben, i guess these guys answered that Q. for me lol. ;D I guess now we just have to rely on you for our fibreglass and bits and pieces. I guess the only way we will ever see another vancraft, is if one of us on here wins 50 million on lotto, and can work full time on setting up. They still have a vancraft shop in america, the van craze is still alive over there. I saw an episode of overhaulin a few months ago, [ have on dvd ] they were doing up a custom chev van, and went to a vancraft type shop, wall to wall - floor to ceiling van parts, disc brakes, roof wings, flares, you name it they had it, it was like being back in the 70s again as i watched. sorry guys, for those born out of the 70s, you missed a dynamic era.
George. ;D ;D
-
hey guys, my copy of the scale drawing of brake caliper brackets is not good enough to post it is unreadable for some reason, sorry. George. ;D ;D :D
